Literacy
There are so many things that Pre-k students need to learn in one year in the area of Literacy.
Phonological Awareness
Students need to separate a sentence into individual words.
Combine words to make a compound word.
Delete a word from a compound word.
Clap to segment words into syllables.
Combine syllables to form words.
Delete a syllable from a word.
Match rhyming words.
Say a word that rhymes with a given word (real or nonsense).
Produce a word that begins with the same sound as a given pair of words.
Combine onset and rime to form one-syllable words, for example /f/+/an/= fan
Blend phonemes to make words. For example: /f/+/u/+/n/=fun
Alphabet knowledge
Manipulate letters in a variety of ways (sorting them, matching, etc.)
Recognize and name at least 20 uppercase and 20 lowercase letters.
Recognize at least 20 letter sounds.
Match sounds with items/letters.
Comprehension of Text Read Aloud
Retell or re-enact the main events of the story in sequence.
Create alternate endings for a story.
Make predictions.
Relate own experiences to facts read in books.
Ask and answer appropriate questions about books.
Identify and discuss concepts of print ( what does an author do, what does an illustrator do, etc.)
Motivation to Read
Repeat parts of familiar books read to them.
Acts out a story with puppets, stuffed animals, etc.
Follow along and turn pages while listening to books on tape or CDs.
Imitate reading behaviors.
Handling a book correctly.
Understand that print carries a message.
Writing
Scribble/write to convey meaning (writing name, pretend writing).
